Norsk Osteopatforbund (NOF)

The Norwegian Association of Osteopaths – NAO (Norsk Osteopatforbund – NOF) was founded in 1993 and organizes most Osteopaths working in Norway. Members consist of approximately 400 osteopaths, plus student members. The membership represents both part-time and full-time, as a part-time programme for physiotherapists was the first programme to be delivered in Norway. Since 2008 there is a well-functioning full-time 4-year programme in Oslo, at Kristiania University College. The authorities and students recognise this programme can apply for financial support.
The Norwegian parliament has decided to regulate osteopathy as a primary healthcare profession, from 1st of May 2022. Individuals need to apply for authorization and a license before being able to practice as an osteopath in Norway. Applications must be presented to the Health directorate.

Osteopaths in Norway have a good level of public recognition and are well-established as providers of primary health care. NOF continues our efforts to build good relations with important stakeholders and does believe the future is promising regarding the osteopathic profession’s position within healthcare.
Patients in need can self-refer. There are possibilities of reimbursement from several of the major insurance companies, but no public reimbursement. Osteopaths often work in close relation with other health care practitioners such as doctors, physiotherapists, chiropractors etc.

The Norwegian Health directorate provides information regarding an application for authorisation and license to practice for healthcare personnel. NOF membership applicants with qualifications from other schools than Kristiania University College are advised to contact NOF administration for further guidance regarding the application process. Please be advised that to become a member applicants will be asked to provide documentation of a Norwegian license to practice, including a healthcare personnel registration number (HPR).
