Danske Osteopater

Danske Osteopater was officially founded in 2013, but the first osteopaths came to Denmark in the late 1980’s from the UK.

There are currently no accredited Danish educational programmes, but two Type II, or part-time, educational programmes, on top of prior healthcare profession (typically as physiotherapists) are offered in Denmark by: The International Academy of Osteopathy (IAO) and The European School of Osteopathy (ESO).

Danske Osteopater, led by their president Hanna Tómasdóttir, gained regulation from 1st of July 2018. The title “osteopath” is now protected by law, and osteopaths are first contact practitioners, to which patients can self refer.

Danske Osteopater is a growing association, from only 43 members in 2013 to 270 members in 2022.

Osteopaths have to apply for an authorization, a license to practise as an osteopath in Denmark, at The Patient Safety Authority – Styrelsen for Patientsikkerhed – who sets the demands for the educational standards, and serves as the regulative body of the osteopathic profession. Osteopathy is covered by several insurance companies in Denmark: Danica, If forsikring, Alm. Brand, PFA, Dansk Sundhedssikring, Topdanmark, Codan, Lærerstandens Brandforsikring, Bauta Forsikring, Runa Forsikring, Sygeforsikringen “danmark” and more.
