The Canadian Federation of Osteopaths
The Canadian Federation of Osteopaths (CFO) association is non- profit corporation comprising of associations representing practitioners of manual Osteopathy. Individual practitioners join the member association in the province or territory in which they practice. Current CFO members include:
- Association of Osteopaths of New Brunswick (ANOB)
- Nova Scotia Association of Osteopaths (NSAO)
- Osteopathie Quebec
- Ontario Association of Osteopathic Manual Practitioners (OAO)
- Manitoba Association of Osteopathic Manual Therapists (MAOMT)
- Saskatchewan Association of Osteopaths (SAO)
- Alberta Association of Osteopathic Manual Therapists (AAOMT)
- Osteopathy BC
Each province or territory is moving towards the newly created National Standards for Osteopathic Care (CSA Z16686:20 Osteopathic Healthcare Provision registered with the Standards Council of Canada) for education as a minimum requirement for membership. In addition, each CFO member association is a non-profit corporation with a Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice, continuing education program, member screening process, and requires their members to hold professional liability insurance coverage.
The CFO supports our members’ path towards osteopathic regulation, advocates for coverage under extended healthcare insurance, and represents Canada throughout the world. In Canada, regulation for healthcare is set by the provinces or territories. We are excited to announce that the province of Quebec is currently close to forming a professional order of Osteopaths and support our member Osteopathie Quebec in their efforts.
Referrals for treatment are only required if the patient’s extended healthcare benefit provider requires one. You can find a qualified practitioner on our member websites listed under “Associations” on the CFO website. Without regulation or title protection, it can be difficult to determine the quality of those practicing Osteopathy. The CFO education standards and membership requirements assure the quality of the more than 2000 individual practitioners within our members associations.
