Brazilian Registry of Osteopaths (Registro Brasileiro dos Ostepatas- RBrO)
The osteopathic presence in Brazil dates back to 1988 when the first Brazilian osteopath who graduated from ESO (UK, 1984-88) began practicing in Brazil. In the meantime, the French osteopath Bernard Quef and SCOM (Sutherland College of Osteopathic Medicine -Belgium) started training a group of professionals to become osteopaths in Brazil. In 1990, these Osteopaths DO had founded the first Brazilian part-time school, type II, IBO – Instituto Brasileiro de Osteopatia, initially in partnership with SCOM, offering, since 1992, supervised internship in the public health network, initially in Rio de Janeiro and, currently in Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo. Nowadays, there are other schools of osteopathy type II training in the process of adapting to the WHO Benchmarks, such as IDOT, EBOM, and Inspirar.
A few years later, in 2000, this same group founded the Brazilian Registry of Osteopaths (Registro Brasileiro dos Ostepatas- RBrO). Alan Borges DO is the current president.
The RBrO has 204 members (numbers by 2023), all of them must abide by the Code of Ethics of Osteopaths in Brazil and have a Professional Indemnity Assurance. The great majority of Osteopaths trained in Brazil had been through type II training, but we also have osteopaths trained in full-time (type I) training abroad. The RBrO has been working to regulate the profession. We have already accomplished osteopathy to be recognized as a profession in the CBO (Brazilian Classification of Occupations), www.mtecbo.gov.br which is an organ of the Ministry of Labor of Brazil.
We are proceeding with a bill of law, number 2775 of 2015, in the House of Representatives for regulation of the profession and foundation of a federal regulatory board. At this moment, the last stage of the process remains to be reached.
The RBrO has been an associate member of the OIA, the international organization representing the osteopathic profession and in relations with the WHO, since 2014.
